Overtime

I know it's been 5 days already and you've probably already forgotten, but on Sunday the dumbest rule in the NFL showed it's ugly head again. That rule, the overtime rule. The NFL overtime is ridiculous, I'm not saying this just b/c I wanted Minny to win, how on earth do you play sudden death in the playoffs. Don't give me this crap that both teams had their chances in regulation. Yeah but so do teams in baseball basketball yet both teams get a chance to score. I'm behind the discussion on this a little bit, but I think my idea is the best.

The NFL should play 10 minutes of overtime, same rules that they currently have, 3 time outs per half, only booth reviews on replay. However, no sudden death, just play 10 minutes and whoever's winning after that wins the game. If nobody scores, regular season tie, playoffs play another 10 minutes. After two 10 minute sessions flip another coin and restart the game again. This is basically the NBA and college basketball rule for overtime, and their games seem to end just fine. Play a shortened period, but not so short one team can hog the ball. If you get the ball with only 2 minutes left well I guess that's all you get. I'm not a huge fan of the college football OT rules, simply for the fact of such a short field it doesn't allow the offense to have all it's arsenal of plays. So, if the NFL would just play more football everyone would be happy.

Championship Breakdown

In the words of Nonpoint, "What a day, what a day, what what a cool day." Jets-Colts was a good game, amazing how less cocky Rex Ryan is when their losing. Vikings-Saints was a great game, I have some big opinions on that game. On to the highlights.......

Peyton Manning looks so focused during games, I don't watch the Colts much, but yesterday after every series he was on the bench with his OC, and ofted he wasn't even watching his defense play.

Joseph Addai still has some sweet moves.

It doesn't matter how big Revis Island is, if you don't cover the other guys why on earth would you throw at Revis. Peyton did go that way a few times, not for huge plays but Wayne did beat him once.

Mark Sanchez played better than expected, the play action to a wide open Braylon was a great play. Of course last year everyone thought Matt Ryan was so great and the Falcons missed the playoffs.

The Jets have hope for next year, Simms said it during the game, the only help they need, is Kris Jenkins and Leon Washington back. Maybe, another corner but hell if you can shut down half the field the only team that's gonna give you problems is the Colts b/c they have 900 WR's.

The Colts must be a system thing, if Garcon and Collie put up numbers like that.

Dustin Keller is a bit of a cock.

Brad Smith could start for the Redskins.

Jim Caldwell is a great head coach, down 17-6, he told the offense to get down the field and score, they did, he helped make the adjustments at halftime, and the second half the Jets were worthless.

Enough about the game nobody watched

This game started like it was gonna be 70-69 by the end, both teams scored on 2 of their first 3 possesions.

Adrian Peterson is a stud, but needs to hold onto the ball.

Whatever happened between Favre and Peterson on the fumbled exchange at the end of the half cost the Vikings the game more than the pick Brett threw at the end of the game.

New Orleans doesn't deserve crap, Minny turned it over 5 times and you only win by 3, you should be ashamed of that performance if your offense is so damned good.

Minnesota's D is awesome, 5 turnovers by their offense and they stopped them for the most part. I think Leslie Frazier should get a head coaching job today. Maybe in Minnesota.

Reggie Bush is Devin Hester and Dante Hall with a little bit more talent, that's it. The only reason he's on this team is he went to USC. That fumbled punt was dumb, fair catch it and go to half.

Brett's first pick was a classic Favre, threw right into triple coverage.

Minnesota's offensive line needs a lot of help, all these guys are touted to be so damn good, Brett was on his ass all night.

Onto the key moment of the game. I'm gonna give a different side to this, not blaming Favre. Brad Childress is an idiot, Darrell Bevell is a dumb ass. You run a play on 2nd down, I understand, trying to get a little closer, but after the play they call timeout with 19 seconds left. WHY, WHY, WHY the hell are doing that. Are you gonna throw the ball on 3rd down? NO, your gonna run it, why not just let the clock run down, call time out run Longwell on the field and kick the game winner as time runs out. The Saints were out of time outs, you have one of the best kickers ever, let him win the damn game. Well after the timeout, again the coaches show their genius and don't get the personel right and Vikings have 12 guys in the huddle. That's coaching, not the QB, all coaching. So now it's a 57 yarder, not unmakeable but still far fetched. Now they decide to throw the ball, why? Run a draw to Taylor if he gets yards fine, if he doesn't than the clock goes down to 4 seconds you call timeout, time runs out miss or make. You throw it incomplete the clock only gets to 15 seconds, if you miss the Saints get at least a shot to move the ball into FG range. You may not understand this b/c your too busy doing your Favre screwed up happy dance, but if you watched the game this is what should've happened, Childress screwed the pooch and he's not catching any of the blame, it's all going on Favre. That's BS and I hope eventually everyone sees it.

The Wonderings January edition

It's been a while and I don't really feel like focusing on one topic so how bout some wonderings. First things first, the Erb and Brady family grew last week when Chris' girlfriend Laci gave birth to a baby girl, so congratulations to the two of you. On to the show, I wonder........

if Brett has two more huge performances left in him?

if whoever wins the NFC game is gonna win the Super Bowl, I hope so.

if I switch to loving Rex Ryan and the Jets they'll lose?

if anyone cares that the two teams in the AFC championship games have two first year head coaches? Peyton Manning is not the coach of the Colts.

if because of that stat, the other 30 teams will fire their coaches to have first year head coaches, it is a copy cat league.

if anyone truly cares about the NBA?

if UNI can keep this pace up, you may not know but they have won 16 in a row, I think I don't even know for sure.

if there was actually someone who went, whoa whoa, Mark McGwire did steroids, I never knew.

why the 3rd most recognized person in the free world hasn't been seen since Thanksgiving?

if hockey is possibly the greatest game ever, went to the Thunderbirds game on Sunday, not only did they beat the best team in the league 3-2, but they also had a full line 5 on 5 brawl, and our goalie went out to center ice and challenged the other teams goalie to a fight, he declined. Another note going to Camp Randall in a little over two weeks to watch an outdoor game, I will report on it, it's gonna rock.

If the Kansas City Patriots, oh I mean Chiefs, are gonna turn into contenders, Weiss and Romeo together again this might be good.

if the NFL owners and NFL players association are really gonna do this, your the most popular sport in the country, don't have a labor stoppage. Your all making an incredible amount of money don't be selfish.

if Mike Shanahan is gonna re-sign every reject Josh McDaniels get's rid of?

if Brandon Marshall is coming to D.C. that reject I'll take, we need some size at WR.

if the Skins are really switching to the 3-4, haven't ever been a fan but our personel oddly fits the system.

if the Bucs will give the Bears that 2nd back, it's not their fault Gaines Adams died but it's not like he performed for the Bears, maybe they'll draft a kicker with the pick or something meaning less?

I really do feel bad for Gaines Adams and his family, I've already written about teammates dying and how much it sucks, hopefully the Bears can recover from this loss.

if Dan Hampton feels like an ass yet? I didn't hear the tape but from what Chris told me he was not very symphathetic about Gaines dying, going on the radio the day after and slamming the poor kid.

if it's March yet, college basketball is boring until March.

if Timmy is really gonna get 10 Million in arbitration, for the record he deserves it and the Giants should make him a 100 million dollar man, he's way better than Zito.

if this could happen this weekend, Vikings 45-Saints 44, Colts 28-Jets 13? Those are my predictions and it's only Tuesday, expect some coverage of the two Super Bowl teams in the coming weeks.

My Awards

Mvp. Warner, come on you know the Cards would suck if Matty Ice was running the show. But seriously Farve. They aren't that great without him. Plus dumb ass Childress got paid for having him.

Least. Easy. Delhomme. They sucked with him. Bring in Matt Moore he played great the Panthers looked back. Winner of the Nfc South in 2010. You heard it here first.

D Mvp. Darrell Revis. Only shut down everybody.

D rook. Know its done but Matthews. The Packers d looked great when they finally played him and didn't take him off the field. So just wanted to say never really liked Cushing or Matthews at USC but they amazing pros.

O rook. McCoy. They are better when he plays. The Igles are caught in a trap. That goes out to the king on his 75 year bday. Westbrooks done and he comes back they are trying to force it to Westbrook. PLAY McCOY!!!!

Surprise team. Bungles. Enought said.

Disappointing team. Seahawks. Didn't see that coming and either did Jim Mora Jr. He should really thank Micheal Vick.

Biggest Move. Playing Miles Austin. Everybody was about ready to right them off halftime of the Chiefs game. Austin goes off boys make the playoffs.

In ending yes 30 for 30 is great. Need more and fast. Plus I feel bad for Texas they would have beat bama with Colt.

Regular Season Awards

The NFL regular season is over time for some hardware to be handed out.

MVP-Chris Johnson, set record for most yards from scrimmage for a single season, rushed for over 2,000 yards, only sixth player to ever do that. Whatever Peyton did has been done before is Johnson doesn't win this the voters have no clue what "MVP" stands for. One more thing, Johnson did this with teams knowing he was the only weapon, VY wasn't gonna beat you, stop Johnson stop the Titans, yet nobody shut him down.

L(east)VP-JaMarcus Russell with a slim win over Jake Delhomme. The Raiders with Gradkowski before he got hurt played well. Then Charlie Frye had them in the lead yesterday, he get's hurt and presto chango Russell loses the game. Delhomme was very accurate throwing it to the defense this year, but he didn't get replaced twice by two career back-ups.

Defensive MVP-Chaz Woodson, played maybe his best season this year. 9 picks, 4 forced fumbles, 2 sacks, and 3 TAINT's (Touchdown After INTerception). Plus, the last few weeks he had to cover the best WR on the field after the Harris injury.

Defensive Rookie MVP-Brian Orakpo moved to LB before the season, and that's a 4-3 LB not a 3-4 pass rushing LB. Ended up with 50 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 11 sacks, and a pro bowl nod. Needs to improve a little in coverage if he's gonna be a LB which I don't want, but hey the kid is good.

Offensive Rookie MVP-Percy Harvin, 60 catches, 6 TD's receiving, 2 return TD's, and 925 yards from scrimmage. This guy is the real deal and Minnesota was a different team when he didn't play.

Surprise Team-close race between New Orleans, Cinncy, and the Jets. I have to go with Cinncy because with New Orleans offense they had a shot to make the playoffs, but nobody had Cinncy coming out of that divison especially over Baltimore and Pitt. Palmer played well, Ochocinco played well, and whoever played RB was real good, didn't matter who.

Most Dissapointing team-Giants or Denver, you decide, I can't. NYG 5-0, miss playoffs completly and get blown out the last two weeks of the year. Denver 6-0, go 2-8 the rest of the year including losing to Washington. Wow, so terrible.

Biggest Move of the Year-New Orleans bringing in Gregg Williams to be D-Coordinator. The offense was stellar last season, but the defense made the difference this year. Sorry, Jay Cutler you can't win this if you lead the league in picks.

Final thought, watch ESPN's 30 for 30, especially "The U," and "Small Potatoes, Who Killed the USFL," you won't be dissapointed. I've only disliked one so far, very good series can't wait for more to come on the air.
